Who Can a Protection Order Be Filed Against?

A Protection Order can only be filed against a family member of the person who needs protection. 

A family member includes: 

  • A parent
  • A brother or sister
  • A spouse or former spouse 
  • A child (including adopted child or stepchild)
  • A father-in-law or mother-in-law
  • A relative through marriage or adoption who under the circumstances should be considered part of the family.
  • Someone who is incapacitated or infirm because of a physical or mental disability or ill health or old age and who under the circumstances should be considered part of the family.
